Bone Grafting to Alveolar Cleft

The residual alveolar cleft, or gap in the gum line, is closed by an Oral Maxillofacial Surgeon using bone graft material harvested from the iliac crest, or hipbone, to provide support for the adult teeth that will soon occupy the cleft space. Preliminary Orthodontic care generally precedes the bone graft, and timing is based on development of the adult teeth as determined by dental x-rays.
